A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to requiring the department of veterans' services to provide veterans with outreach and education on issues related to higher education

 

Be it enacted by the Council as follows:

 

Section 1. Chapter 1 of title 31 of the administrative code of the city of New York is amended by adding a new section 31-106 to read as follows:

§ 31-106 Outreach and education on issues related to higher education. The commissioner, in consultation with the department of consumer affairs and any other agencies identified by the mayor, shall establish and engage in outreach and education efforts to inform veterans about financial issues related to higher education, including, but not limited to: government programs and other resources available to veterans, how to minimize student debt, student loan repayment options, the risks of for-profit or fraudulent colleges and trade schools and how to identify predatory for-profit institutions, and lower-cost alternatives to for-profit higher education. The materials developed for such outreach and education shall be made available on the department’s website.

§ 2.  This local law takes effect immediately.
